defense of true doctrine

"In order to do honour to Christ, in order to defend the true doctrine of the Incarnation, in order to secure a right faith in the manhood of the Eternal Son, the Council of Ephesus determined the Blessed Virgin to be the Mother of God."

- John Henry Cardinal Newman, An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, p. 145

It is so important that this connection is understood properly. As a Lutheran, I was a great fan of Dr Sasse's writings, but was acutely embarrassed by one essay he wrote charging that the Council of Ephesus simply transferred the worship of the Mother Goddess (for which it was well known in ancient times) to the Virgin. I thought even at the time this opinion was unworthy of such a great scholar.

Here is an example where I would not agree with the great Dr. Sasse. Thanks for pointing this out.
